Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars that typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Located at the back of your mouth, these teeth can sometimes cause issues if there's insufficient space for them to grow properly. When a wisdom tooth doesn't have enough room, it may emerge at an angle or remain trapped, a condition known as impaction.

Assessment

To determine if your wisdom teeth might cause problems, our dentist will perform an examination, which may include an X-ray to assess the position of the teeth and their roots. This helps us decide whether removal is necessary and how complex the procedure might be.

The removal of wisdom teeth can often be a difficult surgical procedure. At Four Peaks Dental we provide sedation options for our patients who undergo this treatment. This is to allow for a more pleasant experience, as well as it making it a more safer and predictable procedure.

Reasons for Removal

We may recommend extracting your wisdom teeth if:

  • Impaction: The tooth is stuck against another tooth or bone, preventing proper eruption.

  • Infection or Gum Disease: Partially erupted teeth can create a flap of gum tissue that traps food and bacteria, leading to infection.

  • Tooth Decay: Wisdom teeth located at the back of the mouth can be difficult to clean, making them more susceptible to cavities.

After the Procedure

Post-extraction, it's normal to experience some discomfort and swelling. Our team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to manage these symptoms and promote healing. This may include recommendations for pain relief, dietary guidelines, and tips to keep the extraction site clean. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to monitor your recovery and remove any stitches if necessary.

By proactively addressing potential issues with your wisdom teeth, we aim to maintain your oral health and prevent future complications.
